Simplification of literary and scientific texts to improve reading fluency and comprehension in beginning readers of French

Abstract Reading comprehension and fluency are crucial for successful academic learning achievement. Yet, a rather large percentage of children still have enormous difficulties in understanding written text at the end primary school. In this context, aim our study was to investigate whether simplification, process reducing complexity while keeping its meaning unchanged, can improve reading read. Furthermore, we were interested finding out some readers would benefit more than others from simplification as function their cognitive language profile. To address these issues, developed an iBook application iPads, which allowed us present normal simplified versions informative narrative texts 165 grade 2. measured each sentence, using multiple-choice questions. The results showed that both significantly better texts. Results poor with weaker skills (nonverbal intelligence, memory) benefitted greater extent good somewhat stronger skills.
